Microforests

Bringing the First MicroForests to our region

In 2023, Plan it Wild designed and planted a series of MicroForests on public school campuses in Bridgeport CT. We had been exploring how to reforest the fragmented and small open spaces of suburbia and its urban centers. We discovered what’s called the Miyawaki methodology, which recommends dense tree and shrub plantings that grow rapidly and can establish themselves quickly in developed areas, keeping maintenance requirements at a minimum. Our Bridgeport work was done in partnership with the Aspetuck Land Trust. Since then, we have built about 5-7 other Microforests on school campuses and private land. We will be restoring a basketball court in Norwalk, CT to a MicroForest as well as an open space by a dormitory complex at SUNY Purchase.
